The J.P. Sauer & Sohn, Waffenfabrik, company claims its origins back to 1751, in Suhl, Thuringia. This firm (and region) is best known for its production of guns including; high-quality shotguns, sporting rifles and pistols. While the firm is not normally associated with edged weapons, they did make, or subcontract many bayonets. Come the Third Reich era, many early SA and NSKK daggers were made-Fisher estimates 23,000. By 1935, Sauer did not receive an RZM number to continue manufacturing daggers. Trading ceased at the end of the Second World War, when the Russians overran Thuringia. After the war, operations recommenced in the 1950s. By the 1980s, Sauer successfully collaborated with SIG Arms, in Neuhausen, Switzerland, to create "SIG-Sauer". SIG-Sauer is renowned for its pistols, but has also made hunting rifles, combination weapons and shotguns. The company continued to this day.
