The Ludwig Groten Taschenmesserfabrik company began on May 1, 1919. It registered with the Solingen chamber of commerce on December 8, 1953. The 1922 advertisement above places the company at Malteserstraße 55. Groten was a well-established pocket knife manufacturer. In the 1930s, Groten had purchased the businesses: "David Everts" and "Daniel Küllenberg & Söhne" from their then owner, Julius Everts. Soon after it also purchased the "Friedrich Hoppe GmbH" company. During the Third Reich era, SA daggers and HJ knives were both made, though are extremely rare. On January 1, 1963, Hermann Groten, Ludwig's son, took over the management of the David Everts and Ludwig Groten companies. Trading continued under both names until the difficulties of running two entirely separate companies forced Hermann Groten to form a single business. He chose retaining the older trading name of Everts. Consequently, Ludwig Groten GmbH was dissolved in April 1975. David Everts GmbH became a limited-liability company in the mid-1980s, with Hermann Groten as managing director. The company was still active in 2001.
