Wilhelm Hoppe, Solingen

The Wilhelm Hoppe & Co., Stahlwarenfabrik, company began in 1859. It registered with the Solingen chamber of commerce on July 2, 1881. During the 1860s, Hoppe manufactured Civil War era bayonets, many of which were exported to the United States during the American Civil War. The mace trademark was registered in 1895. Wilhelm Hoppe & Co. was owned by the Unshelm and Meuwsen families in 1900-20, and by Ernst Arnold and Eduard Richard Unshelm in 1939. Hoppe & Co. was listed as an exporter of cutlery and metalware in the 1920s and 1930s. During the Third Reich era, early SA/NSKK daggers were made, though are quite rare. The company continued after the war making cutlery, flatware and straight razors. It is likely the company ceased trading in the 1970s.
