Here we have an early 2nd Class War Merit Cross, which was given to civilians who performed meritorious service behind the lines. It is constructed out of a die struck bronze base that has been bronze washed. It depicts a pebbled Maltese style cross with a wreathed swastika / “1939” (reverse) to the center. To the top is a soldered on loop and a ring which holds approximately 9 inches of original black, white and orange rayon ribbon. I’ve heard it said that the orange ribbon is very early production, though I cannot say for sure. It award measures approximately 1 7/8 inches wide and tall. It retains a nice bronze finish to it! An excellent piece!
