Here we have a vet purchased early 2nd Class War Merit Cross, which was given to civilians who performed meritorious service behind the lines. It is constructed out of a die struck bronze base that has been bronze washed. It depicts a pebbled Maltese style cross with a wreathed swastika / “1939” (reverse) to the center. To the top is a soldered on loop and ring. Accompanying the award is approximately 5 3/4 inches of original black, white and red rayon ribbon. It award measures approximately 1 7/8 inches wide and tall. One of the arms is a bit bent. It retains a nice bronze finish to it! An great piece!
