Always nice to come across a gold navy one! The Narkvik Shield was awarded to all German forces that took honorable part in the battles of Narvik between 9 April and 8 June 1940. It is constructed out of die stamped zinc base that has been gold gilded. The shield shaped obverse depicts a closed winged national eagle clutching a wreathed static swastika in its talons above a three step pedestal and a rectangular bordered “Narvik”, an edelweiss flower, that is flanked by “1940” ” (19 ‐ left, 40 ‐ right) and above a crossed plane propeller and fouled anchor and rope. The edelweiss for the Gebirgsjäger, the anchor for the Kriesmarine and a propeller for the Luftwaffe. The hollow back reverse shows three of the four soldered on flat wire prongs. Take a look at the eagles head, very typical of a later die. It measures approximately 3 9/16 inches high by 1 5/8 inches wide. Nice!
