The gold grade DRL badge was awarded to men and women between the ages of 18-32 who passed the national fitness test for a total of seven consecutive years once the silver badge had been awarded or to individuals over 40 years of age who passed the test within 12 month period. The war wounded version was implemented in 1940, for those military veterans of the Wehrmacht who had been wounded in combat and could no longer perform the physical tests. The wounded version of the badge was designed with different criteria and only those rated with a disability could qualify for the badge. They are all constructed out of a die struck tombak/nickel-silver base that has been bronze/silver washed/gold gilded. The oval shaped obverses depict a centrally placed “DRL” in stylized letters which is surrounded by an oak leaf wreath which is tied together at the bottom with a ribbon and swastika. The reverses correctly display a; soldered on block hinge, soldered on rectangular/round wire catch and flat wire pin. They are also marked “DRGM 35269” and “Wernstein Jena”. They continue to retain beautiful details and gilt! They each measures approximately 1 ½ inches wide by 1 7/8 inches tall. For a great display!
