Grade III General Assault Badge by RK

These hardly come up so it is a pleasure to own it now! The Grade III Allgemeines Sturmabzeiche was awarded to an individual German soldier who served alongside an infantry unit and participated in 50 assaults. It is a die struck, zinc based multi-piece construction (eagle/bayonet/grenade, wreath and “50” plate) that has been silver washed and blackened. The oval shaped obverse depicts a blackened, centrally placed, large closed winged national eagle, clutching a mobile swastika within its talons and is above a crossed model 24 grenade and K98 bayonet. This is then above a soldered on gilded and blackened rectangular “50” number shield and is all surrounded by a massive silvered oak leaf and acorn wreath. The reverse shows the correct features including; the encircled “RK” (Rudolf A. Karneth & Sohne, Gablonz a.N.) maker mark, four rivets, a steel flat wire crimped catch, steel sheet medal crimped hinge (with tombak hinge pin) and steel coke bottle pin. It shows the slight bubbling that all RK badges have. The “50” number shield has lost its gilding as is popular with the majority of these. It continues to retain a beautiful silver wash and blackening to both the eagle and 50 number shield. It has zinc pest. The details throughout the eagle and wreath are just beautiful.
