THE Textbook Example – Cased Pilot Badge by C. E. Juncker
This exact piece is featured in page 146-147 of Stephen Thomas Previtera’s “Combat Badge of the Third Reich” Volume 2.
A Private Purchase Cased J1 Flugzeugführerabzeichen by C. E. Juncker of Berlin (1936-38). The Luftwaffe pilot badge was awarded upon completing flight training and received their license. It is constructed out of two pieces of die struck nickel-silver that have been black burnished and silver plated. The obverse features a blackened centrally placed massive swooping Luftwaffe eagle with outstretched wings clutching a mobile swastika in its talons. The eagle is the attached, at the wings, to a half laurel leaf and berry, half oak leaf and acorn wreath that is tied together at the bottom. The reverse is correctly maker marked “C.E. Juncker Berlin SW”. The reverse also shows two tombak rivets, a soldered on tombak barrel hinge, soldered on tombak round wire catch and round wire pin. All of the components continue to work well. The obverse displays beautiful details throughout the hand enhanced eagle and wreath. If you look closely at the minute details you can tell this is the same pilot badge that is in the book. It measures approximately 2 1/2 inches wide by 2 1/8 inches tall. The badge comes housed in the unique private purchased case that is described in the book. A one of a kind piece!
