Luftwaffe Flugzeugführerabzeichen im Etui by F. W. Assmann & Söhne of Lüdenscheid 1937-39. The Luftwaffe pilot badge was awarded upon completing flight training and received their license. It is constructed out of two pieces of die struck aluminum based that has been black burnished and silver plated and finished in a protective lacquer coating. The obverse features a blackened centrally placed massive swooping Luftwaffe eagle (1st pattern) with outstretched wings clutching a mobile swastika in its talons. The eagle is the attached, at the wings, to a (2nd pattern) half laurel leaf and berry, half oak leaf and acorn wreath that is tied together at the bottom. The reverse is correctly maker marked “A” and “D.R.G.M.”. The reverse also features an integral hinge, soldered on replacement catch, round wire pin and two rivets. The catch has been replaced as is the case with the majority of these aluminum ones. Look I have two right now with the exact same replaced catch (M-13524 & M-13527). Typical age wear. The obverse displays beautiful details throughout the eagle and wreath. It measures approximately 2 1/2 inches wide by 2 1/8 inches tall. The badge comes housed in its appropriate Assmann issue case. The case is constructed out of a wood and pressed cardboard base that is covered in a simulated grained blue leatherette (Lederimitat). To the front is a round steel (lightly oxidized) spring loaded push button. To the back is a steel, staggered, piano hinge (lightly oxidized). There is a small bit of replaced leatherette there, likely done in the period. To the very top is a gold foil Gothic style script which reads: “Luftwaffe flugzeugführer - Abzeichen.”. The interior-bottom of the case is constructed out of a thick pressed cardboard base that is covered in a blue velvet material that outlines a pin, hinge and catch assembly. The interior top is covered in that a blue satin, above a pad. The case is in good condition! The case measures approximately 3 1/8 inches wide and deep and 1 1/16 inch thick. A nice matching assembly!
