A Luftwaffe Flugzeugführerabzeichen im Etui by Friedrich Linden, Lüdenscheid. The Luftwaffe pilot badge was awarded upon completing flight training and obtaining a license. It is constructed out of two pieces of die struck zinc that has been black burnished and silver washed and covered in a protectant lacquer coating. The obverse features a grey/blackened centrally placed massive swooping Luftwaffe eagle with outstretched wings clutching a mobile swastika in its talons. The eagle is the attached, at the wings, to a silver half laurel leaf and berry, half oak leaf and acorn wreath that is tied together at the bottom. The reverse displays a soldered on sheet metal hinge, soldered on oval plate c-shaped catch, round wire steel pin and two zinc rivets. It measures approximately 2 1/2 inches wide by 2 1/8 inches tall. The award comes housed in its original pressed paper carton case. The obverse of the case reads, in black ink: “Luftwaffe Flugzeugführer-Abzeichen”. There has been a repair to the interior hinge. The original tissue paper is also included. See page 128 of T. Previtera’s “Combat Badges of the Third Reich” to see the award and page 140 to see a similar case. A great assembly!
