Orden von Zähringer Löwen Ritterkreuz 2. Klasse mit Schwertern. Instituted December 26th 1812 by Karl Grand Duke of Baden, in memory of the Dukes of Zähringen from whom he was descended. Issued 1866-1918 and awarded for meritorious service to the war. It is a multi-piece die struck silvered and gilded nickel-silver base, multi-colored enamel and green glass inlay construction. The obverse features a centrally placed encircled tribal symbol of the Zähringers above a pattée style green glass cross that has two gilded crossed broad swords coming out of its corners above a leaf motif. The reverse features a centrally placed encircled Zähringer rampant lion above a translucent red background above a pattée style cross with four rivets and a leaf motif to the corners. To the top is a soldered on loop and ring which holds 4 inches of green and yellow rayon ribbon. It measures 1 ½ inches square. Very nice!
