Orden vom Zähringer Löwen Ritterkreuz 1. Klasse mit Eichenlaub und Schwertern im Etui and Award Document. Instituted December 26th 1812 by Karl Grand Duke of Baden, in memory of the Dukes of Zähringen from whom he was descended. Only 244 oak leaves were awarded. It is a multi-piece die struck gilded tombak base, multi-colored enamel and green glass inlay construction. The obverse features a centrally placed encircled tribal symbol of the Zähringers above a pattée style green glass cross that has a leaf motif coming out of its corners. The reverse features a centrally placed encircled Zähringer rampant lion above a translucent red background above a pattée style cross with a leaf motif to the corners. To the top is a soldered on loop and a gilded hollow (vent hole to the bottom) oak leaf attachment . The award measures 1 ½ inches square. Accompanying the award is a folded court mount style green and yellow rayon ribbon. The award and ribbon come housed in its appropriate issue case. The case is constructed out of a wood and pressed cardboard base that is covered in a simulated grained maroon leather. The top center features an impressed gold foil crowned royal monogram. To the front is a gilded brass rectangular spring loaded push button. To the back is a gilded steel, staggered, piano hinge. Both remain in well working condition. The interior top lid is lined in royal purple satin and has an underlying pad. The bottom interior of the case is constructed out of a wood base that is covered in royal purple fibrous felt. It has a small broken portion to the bottom center and has become removable. There is a place for the ribbon to the top. Minor scuffs to the exterior leather. The case measures approximately 2 3/4 inches wide by 3 1/2 inches deep and 1 inch thick. Included with the award is the appropriate Award Document. Very nice!
