Gran Cruz - Orden del Mérito Militar con Distintivo Blanco (1938-1975) by Cejalvo of Madrid. The Order of Military Merit was established in Spain by the Queen Isabel II on August 3, 1864. It was founded to reward the Spanish Armed Forces, including the Civil Guard, in recognition of gallantry and military merits in times of war and peace. The White Distinction is awarded to military personnel in recognition of meritorious service during peacetime. It is a multi-piece die struck construction made of gilded and silvered brass that contains multi-colored enamel work. The obverse features an encircled centrally placed and separately applied Spanish Coat of arms, which consists of a gold rose on a blue oval backing with alternating rampant lions (on a white background) and castles (on a red lined translucent background) to each quadrant. The Coat of Arms is on top of a white Greek style cross that has a bar and Spanish crown to the top, which is on top of an eight pointed textured star with an alternating rampant lion/castle to each corner. The reverse features two prongs and a pin, hinge and catch assembly. It measures 2 ½ inches wide and tall. Included with it is its appropriate miniature which measures 5/8 of an inch square with a ring to the top. Both are housed in its appropriate case. To the interior lid it is maker marked “Cruz 5x7 Cejalvo Madrid” in black ink. The case measures 3 ¾ x 3 ¾ x 1 ¼. A rare find!
