US Model 1850 Army Foot Officer's Sword

Please note this item is no longer available and you were redirected to our Archives.

United States Army Civil War Vintage Mod. 1850 Foot Officer's Sword (rank of Captain and Lieutenant). Made by Henry Sauerbier & Co., Newark, New Jersey. Slightly curved blade is engraved and etched with military designs, federal shield, U.S., floral designs, and maker's mark. Ornate brass D-Guard is cast with floral design and "U.S." in the hand-guard. The "U.S." in handguard distinguishes the Sauerbier version from others because the "U.S." is non regulation and should only appear in the staff model. Black leather grip, has brass wire wrap. Black leather scabbard has engraved top, center and bottom mounts. The top mount is loose a common condition as the leather tends to shrink over 150 yrs. This could be secured with some animal based glue but I prefer to leave as is. Sauerbier Swords are rare and highly prized for their design, quality, beauty and scarcity. Sauerbier only made swords during the Civil War as he was primarily a tool maker and inventor. Bezdek believes that this sword was part of the government order placed on Sauerbier in August 1861 for 100 Foot Officer's Swords. Included is a COA from Guttermann's
