Early Personalized SA Dagger by Curdts Nachf

Please note this item is no longer available and you were redirected to our Archives.

A personalized example from an advanced collection! The blade on this one looks excellent! The acid etched "Alles für Deutschland" motto and "Curdts Nachf Solingen" maker mark are both nicely executed! The crossgrain is easily visible and it has been cleaned at some point. The fit remains nice and tight and the tip comes to a perfect point! This blade rates an Exc++. It shows the commonly seen age grey/spotting and surface scratches throughout. The reverse is Jeweler etched, "In herzlicher Kameradschaft SCHMIDMAIER Staffelführer I M/86, roughly translated, "In cordial camaraderie SCHMIDMAIER squad leader M/86", with M/86 being the SA unit. above that is the SA leaders signature in cursive,"SCHMIDMAIER". The steel based, anodized scabbard looks great. It continues to hold 85%+ of its factory lacquer. the only defect deing a pin-prink dent to the lower obverse. The solid nickel silver scabbard fittings look excellent! The ball is undamaged. All four screws remain tightly intact. The scabbard / crossguard closes with a snap! The reverse of the lower crossguard is marked "HO" (Hochland). The brown hardwood grip looks excellent! Just the common pressure marks, rubs and bruises from normal period wear. No chips or flakes! The solid nickel eagle retains beautiful details and has a perfect fit. The SA roundel has a perfect fit and retains 99%+ of its enamel. A researchable SA dagger! Just a note I have some further info on the inscription for those considering the reseach project:

  • Curdts piece seems to be a presentation dagger [in heartfelt comradeship- like the Roehm daggers!] given by a Staffelfuehrer called Schmidmaier who was the leader if the first Staffel of Motorstandarte 86. A Staffel in the NSKK was the equivalent of a Sturmbann [or battalion, as I’m sure you know] in the SA and so this man was the equivalent of a major. Motorstandarte 86 had its headquarters in Munich, so the HO group mark on the crossguard fits in with this. The use of the capital J in place of the capital I was fairly commonly used in German military circles so as to avoid confusion, as a capital letter ‘I’ could be mistaken for a Roman number I, which was used in the military as a battalion indicator. This is why you can see medal citations made out to a member of Jnf-Regt 16, for example. Although there would seem to be no possible chance of confusion here, for some reason the engraver seems to have preferred to use the J.
