Luftwaffe Oberfeldwebel Martin Hähle LC88 - 2. Klasse Silber Spanien-Kreuz mit Schwertern by L/13 - Paul Meybauer of Berlin mit Nadel Miniatur im Etui. The Silver Spanish Cross with Swords was awarded to those who had at least moderate combat experience, having participated in decisive battles. It is a multi-piece construction made out of a die struck tombak base that has frosted highlights and was finished in a protective lacquer coating. The obverse depicts a convex pebbled Maltese style cross with two crossed broad swords and four Luftwaffe eagles to each corner, that has an encircled (separately soldered on) mobile swastika to the center. The concave full back reverse is LDO marked “L/13” (Paul Meybauer, Berlin). It also has a soldered on round wire catch, soldered on block hinge and coke bottle pin, all of which are in well working condition. The detail and highlights are superb and it displays nice patina. It measures 2 3/16 inches wide and tall.

Included is Hähle’s Silver Spanish Cross with Swords Stickpin. It is constructed out of a die struck nickel-silver hat has been silver washed with frosted highlights and was finished in a protective lacquer coating. The obverse depicts a convex pebbled Maltese style cross with two crossed broad swords and four Luftwaffe eagles to each corner, that has an encircled mobile swastika to the center. The full back concave reverse has a crimped on and knurled stickpin. The detail and patina are beautiful! The head measures 11/16 of an inch wide and tall.

The award and stickpin come housed in the appropriate issue case. It is constructed out of a wood and pressed cardboard base that is covered in a simulated grained blue leather. To the front is a multi-piece steel, rectangular spring loaded closure button. To the back is a steel, staggered, piano hinge that is covered in the simulated leather. The interior-bottom of the case is constructed out of a pressed cardboard base that is covered in a blue fibrous felt material that outlines the pin, hinge and catch assembly. There is a place for the stickpin. The interior top is constructed out of a blue silk-rayon like material and has an underlying pad. It shows minor scuffs and wear throughout. The case measures 3 inches wide by 3 1/8 inches deep and 1 inch thick. I have no provenance with the case, so it was likely added.

This previously came from “Galerie d’Histoire André Hüsken”. Should you desire to have Hähle’s Radio Operator/Air Gunner Badge it is still available here: https://www.huesken.com/shop/de/luftwaffe-auszeichnungen-urkunden/fliegerschuetzenabzeichen-mit-blitzbuendel-50814.html

A great assembly, a gorgeous display piece!
