Rural “Cut-Down” - Seitengewehr für Polizei by Alcoso – Alexander Coppel of Solingen. The plated bade on this one looks great! It retains a nice and bright mirror like finish along with a perfect fit and sharp tip! The blade is stamped with the “ACS” (obverse), the spine proof stamp and the “ACS Alcoso Coppel Solingen” (reverse) maker mark, which are all beautifully executed. The blade rates a solid Exc++. It features some plating loss, bubbling and oxidization spotting throughout. The brown (rural) leather scabbard body looks great. It has the common scuffs and warping due to the runners. It continues to retain all of its stitching and the four vertical lines running through it giving it that finishing touch of German detail! The nickel-silver based scalloped scabbard fittings remain in excellent condition, matching the hilt in color and patina. Both staples remain intact. The scabbard is clearly marked “L.O.33.” (Landjägerei Polizeiverwaltung Osnabrück) exactly matching the crossguard! The hilt depicts wonderful burnished detail throughout, with the oak leaves, acorns and highly detailed pommel eagle! The multi-toned stag grip plates are tightly secured with two aluminum rivets. The centrally placed burnished aluminum police eagle is properly pined and retains nice detail! Finally finishing this is a correct brown police frog, a near impossible accouterment to find. It is marked and dated 1937. An excellent early police bayonet!
The majority of these "cut down" police bayonets were constructed for the Weimar period and originally fitted with a 17" blade, a clamshell device on the obverse & a Weimar star grip emblem. In July 1936 the police agencies were centralized into one organization. With the new regulations these bayonets had their blades ground down to 13", the grips were shortened (which explains the odd grip holes that are frequently but not always seen on these bayonets, sometimes filled with wax, sometimes not) and the Weimar grip emblems were replaced with the police Third Reich emblem.
