This is an original WW1 Imperial German Brass Fussartillerie Artillery Aiming Director / Compass. These instruments were designed to be mounted on binocular stands for directing artillery fire. It’s brass frame is 4 ½” width. It has a silvered, glazed face with blue & white needle. The rim of the case has graduation markings and the frame is numbered ‘54088’. The frame is also marked ‘Ziel’ above arrow. The face has North ‘N’, South ‘S’ and West ‘W’ indicators and is marked ‘BR Fussartillerie’ together with The Carl Zeiss Jena manufacturer’s trademark . The rear of the case is stamped with numbers and other small unreadable numbers. The side button releases the compass hand and locks it as it should. The compass functions as it should.
