United Nations Operation in Ivory Coast

This mission was established under UN Security Council resolution 1528, of Feb 27, 2004, to monitor the cease-fire and movements of armed groups, support disarmament, demobilization, reintegration and repatriation and resettlement, protect UN Personnel, institutions and civilians, support humanitarian assistance and the implementation of the peace process, provide assistance in the field of human rights and restore a civilian policing presence in the country et reestablish the authority of the judiciary and the rule of law throughout Cote d’Ivoire. Police officers are responsible for ensuring compliance with the UN mandate as well as international criminal justice and human rights standards. They ensure that law and order are effectively maintained. The mission mandate calls for non-executive policing duties (i.e. unarmed), which includes a monitoring role. Canadian police officers are responsible for assessing and identifying the current standards and essential training needs of police officers in Côte d’Ivoire.
