Named - 1827 Pattern Royal Navy Officers Sword by Gieves

1827 Pattern Royal Navy Officers Sword Belonging to Lieutenant Commander Kenneth Macrae. Offered is an original 1827 Pattern Royal Navy Officer's sword belonging to Kenneth Norman Mackenzie Macrae of the Royal Navy. This piece is in good condition, retaining good detail to the brass metal furniture, including the lion head pommel, full maine backstrap, locket & King's Crown adorned elaborate full guard with crown & anchor motif. The original worn condition full bullion knot is still attached. The scabbard has one bend to the leather just below the center mount. The 80cm long straight single-edged (commissioned into service in 1929) blade shows acid etchings to both sides of the blade, running 2/3 the entire length. The etching is typical of the early mid to late 1930's era, with etched proof star and crown/anchor/royal cypher with foliage and arms. Maker marked to Gieves (Wilkinson).

It appears Macrae joined the Royal Navy during the later years of WW1 where he was a midshipman aboard HMS Glorious. According to the UK Navy Lists it appears Macrae was promoted to Lieutenant on the 15th July 1921. At the outbreak of WW2 Kenneth Macrae is a lieutenant commander aboard The HMS Durban. On the 30th day of December, 1940 Macrae joins the operations division of The Admiralty where it appears he stayed until the end of the war when he retired. He passed away on the 2nd of July 1958 at the age of 59. Kenneth Macrae came from an important family. His grandfather Charles Mackenzie Macrae was a very old, if not the oldest, member of the medical profession in the north of Scotland. Kenneth's father, Alexander Macrae, was Colonel of the Malibur Volunteer Rifles and was made a Companion of the Order of the Indian Empire.
