Condor Legion 1st Pattern Verwundetenabzeichen in Silber. Condor Legion Wound Badge was instituted on May 22, 1939 and was awarded to German volunteers who fought in the 1936-1939 Spanish War of Liberation. The 2nd class silver version was awarded for being wounded three or four times, or suffering loss of a hand, foot or eye from hostile action (also partial loss of hearing), facial disfigurement or brain damage via hostile action. The Condor Legion Wound Badge in Silver was the highest awarded wound badge at that time, as no one qualified for the gold’s award criteria. It is constructed out of a two piece die stamped cupal base that has been silver gilded and chemically blackened. The oval shaped obverse depicts an embossed profile of a mobile swastika, above an M16 pattern helmet, which is above two crossed broad swords. This lies on a pebbled field and is surrounded by a laurel leaf and berry wreath which is tied together at the bottom with a bow tie. The full back reverse has a soldered on tombak block hinge, soldered on tombak rectangular wire catch and tombak flat pin assembly. All of the components are non-magnetic and remain in well working condition. The badge measures 1 ¾ inches tall by 1 ½ inches wide. This particular type/maker of condor legion wound badges is the most desirable.
