Ottoman Empire - Imperial Gallipoli Star by BB&Co.

Harp Madalyası - German-made. The Gallipoli Star was instituted by Sultan Mehmed V on March 1, 1915, and was awarded by the Ottoman Empire for gallantry in battle. It was awarded to Turkish and German - Austrian soldiers who participated in the operations against the Allied forces who attempted unsuccessfully the assault against the Turkish fortifications of the Dardanelles straits by landing on the Gallipoli peninsula. It is a multi-piece die struck Fakfon based construction that has been nickel-plated and contains red translucent enamel work. The star shaped obverse features a centrally placed tughra of Mehmed V, above the date bar which reads: “1333” (1915 AD), both of which are partially encompassed by a crescent. The full back reverse features a soldered-on hinge and catch plate that is maker marked “BB & Co.” with a round wire pin (potentially a replacement). All of the components remain in well working condition. The enamel work is 99%+. Beautiful patina. It measures 2 1/8 inches wide and tall.
