VFV - “Gold gab ich für Eisen” Non-Portable Medal 1916

“Gold gab ich für Eisen” Vaterländischer Frauenverein (Patriotic Women’s Association – Forerunner to the DRK German Red Cross) Medaille 1916. The famous “Gold gab ich für Eisen” (I gave Gold for Iron) slogan was a call to women to donate their gold and jewelry, in return for Iron jewelry, to support and finance times of war. Initiated in 1813, a ring was given in return. This initiative was repeated in WWI for this non-portable medal. It is constructed out of a die stamped blackened iron base. The obverse features a kneeled women in a dress, holding a jewelry box close by, with her other arm outstretched with a hanging necklace in hand, underneath an arched “In Eiserner Zeit” (In Iron Times), and above “1916”. The reverse reads: “Gold Gab Ich Zur Wehr Eisen Nahmich Zur Her” above an Oak leaf branch and “Hosaeus” (Designer - Hermann Hosaeus). It measures 40mm in diameter.
