USA – Korean Service Medal

The Korean Service Medal (KSM) was created November 8, 1950, by President Harry Truman. The medal was awarded to members of the U.S. Military for service or participation in operations in the Korean area between June 27, 1950 and July 27, 1954. It is constructed out of a die struck bronze base that has been chemically burnished and lacquered. The round shaped obverse features a Korean gateway (iljumun) below an arched: “Korean Service”. The reverse displays a Korean “Taegeuk” symbol above a half oak leaf and acorn, half laurel leaf and berry spring and underneath an arched: “United States of America”. To the top is a rectangular loop and ring which holds a light blue and white (United Nations Flag) ribbon. The reverse has a bar that is maker marked “Graco – GI” with a pin, hinge and catch assembly. The medal measures 1 ¼ inches in diameter.
