The Silver Star Medal (SSM) was instituted on July 9, 1918, and is the third-highest military combat decoration that can be awarded to a member of the United States Armed Forces. It is awarded for gallantry in action against an enemy of the United States. It is constructed out of a two-piece bronze/nickel base that has been bronze/silver washed. The star shaped obverse features a small star surrounded by rays and a laurel leaf and berry wreath that is tied together at the bottom, which is to the center of a star. The reverse reads: “For Gallantry in Action. To the top is a rectangular loop that holds blue, white and red ribbon. The reverse has a bar that is maker marked: “Graco-GI” with a pin, hinge and catch assembly. It measures 1 7/16 inches wide and tall.
