United States, WWII - Combat Infantryman Badge, Special Skill Group 1 Badge. Instituted November 15, 1943, the badge is awarded to infantrymen and Special Forces soldiers in the rank of colonel and below, who fought in active ground combat while assigned as members of either an Infantry or Special Forces unit of brigade size or smaller at any time after December 6, 1941. It is constructed out of a sterling silver base that has been silver washed, chemically burnished and contains blue enamel work. The obverse features a flintlock rifle on a rectangular blue base with an oak leaf wreath that is open to the top and tied together with a ribbon to the bottom. The semi-color back reverse is marked: “Sterling” and has two pins. It measures 3 inches wide by 1 inch tall.
