Please note this item is no longer available and you were redirected to our Archives.

Grand Duchy of Hesse, Imperial War - Kriegsehrenzeichen. On June 26, 1916, the Decoration of Honor for War Welfare was converted into this War Decoration. The Decoration of Honor could be handed in and the reverse was ground down in the factory and replaced with the “Kriegs- Ehren- Zeichen” inscription. It was awarded for memorious services rendered in the war. It is constructed out of a die struck bronze base. The round shaped obverse features a royal crown above “ELE”, which is surrounded in a decorative border. The reverse reads: “Kriegs- Ehren- Zeichen” and is surrounded by a laurel and berry wreath that is tied together at the top and bottom. The top features a soldered-on loop and ring which holds 4 ¼ inches of red and white ribbon (correct colors, yet incorrect ribbon). The award measures 1 inch in diameter. A rarer example.
