A Second Form - Grubenwehr Ehrenzeichen 1938. Introduced January 30, 1938, the Mine Rescue Honor Award was awarded to deserving miners or members of a mine rescue team. It is constructed out of a die stamped nickel-silver base that had been chemically burnished. The round shaped obverse features a German national eagle with out-stretched wings clutching a wreathed mobile swastika in its talons above a crossed hammer and chisel. The reverse reads “Für Verdienst im Grubenwehrwesen” (For Merit in Mining) and is above a half acorn wreath. To the top is a soldered-on loop and ring which holds 3 inches of orange, black and white rayon ribbon. It measures 1 3/8 inches in diameter. A rare piece.
