A 3. Stufe Dienstauszeichnung für den Reichsarbeitsdienst für 12 Jahre im Etui. Instituted January 30, 1938, the 12-year RAD Long Service medal was awarded to all members of the RAD who contributed 12 years of loyal service. It is constructed out of a die stuck nickel-silver base that has been silver washed with polished highlights. The oval shaped obverse features a RAD emblem, which consists of; a mobile swastika in front of an upright spade shovel head that has a wheat sheath coming out either side of it, which lies on a smooth background and is surrounded by an oak leaf and acorn wreath that is tied together at the top and bottom. The reverse of the badge reads: “Für treue Dienste im Reichsarbeitsdiens” (For Faithful Service in the Reich Labor Service) on a smooth field and is also surrounded by the same wreath. To the top is a soldered-on loop and ring which holds approximately 3 1/2 inches of folded blue rayon ribbon and a stitched on well working brass based gilded pin assembly. The badge measures 1 5/8 inches high by 1 1/4 inches wide. The award comes housed in its original issue case. The case is constructed out of pressed cardboard with a simulated brown, textured, leather covering and a brown felt inlay to the interior. There is an impressed encircled silvered “12” to the top. The case measures 4 inches long by 1 15/16 inches wide by 5/8 inches thick. A very nice assembly!
