A Eisernes Kreuz 2. Klasse im Privat Etui. Instituted September 1, 1939, the Iron Cross 2nd Class was awarded for an act of bravery in the face of the enemy, or actions that were clearly above and beyond the call of duty. The award is a multi-piece, die struck construction that has been soldered together. The single piece core is constructed out of an iron metal base that has been black enamel painted. The two-piece frame is constructed out of a nickel silver base that has been silver washed and polished. A final protectant lacquer was applied over the entire award. The obverse features; a pattée style cross that has a centrally placed embossed mobile swastika and “1939” to the lower arm, which is all on a black base and surrounded by a silvered ribbed/beaded row and a flat outlying border. The reverse features that same black base with a raised “1813” to the lower arm and has that same ribbed and flat outlying boarder. To the top is a soldered-on loop and ring. The cross measures 1 11/16 inches wide and tall. The cross comes housed in a private retail market case. Though extremely rare, cases are known to have made for EKII’s during the Third Reich era (see pg. 575 of Maerz and Alt’s “The Iron Cross 2. Class” and pg. 283 of Previtera’s “The Iron Time A History of the Iron Cross” and were clearly made in abundance during the Great War). This was an additional cost option and was band after the LDO took over in 1941. The vaulted case is constructed out of a wood and pressed cardboard base that is covered in a simulated blue alligator skin leatherette. The interior top lid is lined in pearl white satin and has an underlying pad. The bottom interior of the case is constructed out of a cardboard base that is covered in a grey velvet material that outlines the cross. There is a tombak push button to the front and two staggered bar hinges to the back. The case measures 4 ¼ inches deep, 3 1/4 inches wide and 1 inch thick. A rare opportunity to own rare variation set up.
