Australia, WWII - Australia Service Medal 1939-1945. Named to Sapper A. P. Johnston of the 2/12 Field Company of the Army Artillery Regiment (Service Number: NX4530 - N = New South Wales | X = Australian Service Forces or Volunteer Overseas Service). Instituted November 30, 1949, the Australia Service Medal 1939-1945 was a campaign medal awarded to members of the Australia Armed Forces, Mercantile Marine and the Volunteer Defense Corps, for 18 months full-time service at home or overseas, or at least three years part-time service, between September 3, 1939 and September 2, 1945. It is constructed out of a die stamped cupro-nickel base that has been silver plated. The round shaped obverse features the crowned, facing left, effigy of King George VI surrounded by: “GEORGIVS VI D:G:BR:OMN:REX F:D:IND:IMP.” The reverse shows the coat of arms of the Commonwealth of Australia surrounded by “The Australia Service Medal 1939–1945”. To the top is a single toe claw mount, with a straight non-swivel suspender, that holds 4 inches of dark blue, red, khaki and light blue ribbon. The rim is officially impressed: “NX4530 A. P. Johnston”. The award measures 36mm in diameter.
