Unofficial - Coronation Medal 1937

United Kingdom - Coronation Medal 1937. An unofficial award, available for purchase, commemorating the coronation of King George VI, which took place on May 12, 1937, following the death of King George V on January 20, 1936, and the abdication of King Edward VIII on December 11, 1936. It is constructed out of a die stamped brass base that has been gold plated. The round shaped obverse features the crowned, left facing, effigies of King George VI in front of Queen Elizabeth surrounded by: “George VI Elizabeth Crowned May XII” and flanked by “ECRP” (left) and “MCM XXX VII” (right). The reverse feature the sitting goddess of victory beside her helmet holding a crown that is being taken up by a dove with an olive branch in its mouth surrounded by: “Canada India S. Africa Australia New Zealand Britain”. To the top is a hole with a bent round wire suspender which holds 2 3/4 inches of blue, white and red ribbon. Attached to the top of the ribbon is a stamped, gilded, brass bar which has laurel leaves to the obverse and the reverse shows as well working pin, hinge and catch assembly and is marked: “Patent No 370595”. The catch is slightly bent. It measures 36 mm in diameter.
