Just purchased form the veteran’s family! A M36 Type A / Type II - Schutzstaffel Kettendolch für Offiziere. The blade on this one looks great! The crisp, acid etched “Meine Ehre heißt Treue” motto provides a great contrast to the bright blade. The crossgrain is easily visible all the way from the hilt to tip. The tip comes to a sharp point and it continues to hold a nice and tight fit. There is no maker mark and this is exactly how these were issued from the factory. The blade rates Exc++. It shows the common surface scratches/runner marks and spotting/age grey throughout, along with a wee spot to the tip. The sheet metal based black painted scabbard body on this one looks great. It shows the common hits from the chain yet continues to hold 95%+ paint coverage. There is one wee pressure mark to the side edge. The solid nickel-silver scabbard fittings look excellent. The ball retains a nice round shape. All five screws remain intact. The chain is the most desirable type being the Type A / early Type II variation with the solid nickel-silver links with black burnished backgrounds. The burnishing on this one has been cleaned and the lower connector has been re-attached, both in the period IMO. The chain links show wonderful detail to the skulls and SS runes. The correct first upper link reverse is clearly “SS” proof marked. The wootans-knot clip looks great. It now works well as the spring was broken when I got it and I replaced it. The nickel-silver based crossguards are in excellent shape. They match the scabbard fittings and chain perfectly. The black hardwood grip on this one is a real treat! Clearly a choice piece of grained wood was chosen for this one. I just love it. No cracks, flake or chips. The grip to crossguard fits are perfect. The solid nickel-silver eagle is beautifully detailed. The SS roundel retains 99%+ of its enamel and also has a perfect fit. Overall, this is a very desirable piece that has never been in a collection!
