Switzerland - Vetterli Sägebajonett Mod. 1878 by S.I.G. Neuhausen. Introduced in 1878, this bayonet was used on the Vetterli rifle, which was used by the Swiss and Italian army as well as the Russians in WWI. The fullered, spear point, single edged sawback blade on this one looks great. It is nicely maker marked: “S.I.G. Neuhausen”. It has a nice bright matte like finish. Perfect fit and tip. It rates NM. The scabbard body is made out of a blackened tanned leather base. It has been wonderfully preserved. The top and bottom fitting are plated sheet metal. They are secured by one rivet to the front and two to the back. The throat is secured with a screw to the back. The obverse is marked “23”. The hilt is constructed out of plated cast iron. The crossguard is serialized: “201143”. The grip feature two checkered composite grip plates that are secured by four rivets (early M1878 variation). The leaf spring clip and push button work well. There is a retaining screw just below the eagle head pommel. The whole thing is very well inspection proof marked throughout. It measures 24 ¼ inches long.
