The state frames date back to Emperor Wilhelm. They were gifted as a special sign of thankfulness and contained a portrait photo with handwritten dedication in a silver frame, instead of a wearable decoration. The head of state from the “Weimar Republic” continued this tradition and after the takeover of the government by Adolf Hitler, the practice continued. Today, the collecting community refer to the state frames presented by Adolf Hitler as “the formal frames”. They were produced under the supervision of Professor Gerdy Troost and were presented in a lavishly worked cassette which is upholstered with red/brown morocco leather/saffian with velvet interior lining and silver embossed national emblem produced by Frieda Thiersch. The hand hammered silver frames were produced by twins Franz and Hermann Wandinger in Munich. Though the exact number of frames presented is unknown, documentation exists that on August 21, 1936, one hundred were ordered urgently and delivered. Professor Troost invoiced the Reichs Chancellery 150.00 mark for the silver frames and 50.00 mark for the cassettes with interior leather/saffian stand. The frame is a 9 ½” x 13 ½” three-stepped hand hammered silver frame with a 1 ¾” x 8 ¼” lower panel featuring the relief center motif of a raised national socialist eagle and wreathed swastika flanked by the initial's "A" and "H", outlined with a “Greek-key” pattern. The center 10 ½” x 8” area of the frame is a glass covered Hoffmann portrait photo of Hitler. The Lower 1 ½" white border of photo is left blank for an original ink dedication,
