United States – Named, Marine Corps Officer’s Mameluke Sword with Portepee and Issue Bag, made in Solingen, Germany and distributed by H-H - Hilborn-Hamburger Inc. of New York. The German made, stainless steel, slightly curved, single edged, multi-fullered, etched, 32 ¾ inch long blade on this one is gorgeous. The acid etched panels are crisp and dark providing a beautiful motif. They clearly feature a bannered “United States Marines”, the Betsy Ross flag, Marine Corp shields and floral patterns to either side. The reverse is jeweler engraved, named to a “David J. Skoog”, it also features the distributor mark which reads: “Stainless”, above the H-H Eagle “Trademark”, above “Hilborn - Hamburger Inc. New York” above “Made in Solingen Germany”. The obverse features the Star of David and reads “Proved” to the center. The spine reads: “USMC Serial No 323” (H-H acceptance number) and the belly: “Germany”. The white felt buffer pad remains intact. The scabbard is made of polished steel sheet metal with brass fittings, which include; a decorative drag (secured with four screws), two laurel leaf and berry bands (each held by a single screw) with rings and a throat (secured with one screw and marked: Germany). The scabbard remains dent free. The gilded brass hilt features a cruciform guard with pointed langets and quillions that end at an acorn each (one is removeable). The gilding has faded in some areas. The P-shaped grip features ivoried celluloid hollow grip plates that are secured with two star capped through rivets. There is a hole to the pommel top which allows the black leather portepee to be tied on. This one comes with its light blue issue bag. There are holes and age staining throughout. It reads: “Made in Germany”, “32"” and “stainless”. A rare accessory. Overall, a great named example with the bag!
