Infanterie-Sturmabzeichen in Silber by Gebruder Wegerhoff of Lüdenscheid. Instituted December 20, 1939, the Infantry Assault Badge was awarded to a soldier who had taken part in three assaults since January 1, 1940, had fought in the front lines, had attempted a break-in with a weapon or had been involved in combat operations on three different days. The silver variant was awarded non-motorized infantry divisions and mountain infantry companies. It is constructed out of a die struck, zinc-alloy base that has been silver washed. The oval shaped obverse depicts a rifle and bayonet below a Heer closed winged eagle clutching a mobile swastika within its talons. This is all surrounded by an acorn and oak leaf wreath that is tied together at the bottom. The full back reverse is maker marked: “GWL” (encircled) and features a stamped hinge, stamped catch and sturdy round wire pin. They all remain in well working condition. It measures 2 7/16 inches tall by 1 7/8 inches wide. Nice detail.
