A J2 Luftwaffe Beobachterabzeichen im Etui by C.E. Juncker of Berlin. Instituted January 19, 1935, the observer badge was awarded after completion of two month qualifying service, after five operational flight as observer, or if the recipient was wounded while posted as observer (prior to the completion of the other criteria). It is constructed out of a two piece, die struck, tombak/nickel-silver base that has been burnished/silver washed and covered in a protective lacquer coating. The obverse depicts a detailed Luftwaffe open winged eagle that is clutching a mobile swastika in its talons. The eagle is in front of a half laurel leaf half oak leaf wreath that is tied together at the bottom. The reverse of the badge correctly displays; the “C. E. Juncker Berlin SW” maker mark, behind the eagle. It also shows a soldered on round wire catch, soldered on barrel hinge, a round wire pin and two rivets. The badge is in great condition! Beautiful details throughout the eagle's wings head and wreath! It measures 2 1/16 inches wide and tall. The Badge comes housed in the appropriate Juncker style case. The case is constructed out of a wood and pressed cardboard base that is covered in a simulated grained blue leatherette. To the front is a steel round push button. To the back is a gilded steel, staggered, piano hinge. To the very top in the gold foil Gothic style script it reads: “Beobachterabz.”. The interior-bottom of the case is constructed out of a pressed cardboard base that is covered in a dark blue velvet material and outlines the pin, hinge and catch assembly. The interior top is covered in a blue/purple satin material. Minor wear and scuffs throughout. The case measures 3 inches wide and 3 3/16 inches deep and 15/16 of an inch thick. A desirable piece!
