A Infanterie-Sturmabzeichen in Silber by Emil Ferdinand Wiedmann of Frankfurt am Main. Instituted December 20, 1939, the Infantry Assault Badge was awarded to a soldier who had taken part in three assaults since January 1, 1940, had fought in the front lines, had attempted a break-in with a weapon or had been involved in combat operations on three different days. The silver variant was awarded non-motorized infantry divisions and mountain infantry companies. It is constructed out of a die struck zinc base that has been silver washed. The oval shaped obverse depicts a rifle and bayonet below a Heer closed winged eagle clutching a mobile swastika within its talons. This is all surrounded by an acorn and oak leaf wreath that is tied together at the bottom. The full-back reverse is maker marked: “W” and displays a soldered-on nickel-silver sheet metal hinge, a soldered-on replacement flat wire catch and a steel round wire pin. They all remain in well working condition. It measures 2 7/16 inches tall by 1 7/8 inches wide.
