Bulgaria - Type I, III Class Commander’s Civil Merit Order
Kingdom of Bulgaria, c.1891-1908 - Type I - Орден за гражданска заслуга. Instituted August 2, 1891, by Prince Ferdinand I, the Order of Civil Merit was awarded in recognition of exceptional achievements in Bulgarian civil life and society. The III Class was awarded to foreign and Bulgarian high-ranking Officials. It is a multi-piece gilded brass and multi-colored enamel construction. The obverse features a central disc bearing the royal monogram of Ferdinand I, inn white on a red translucent emanating background, surrounded by “за Гражданско заслуги” (For Civil Merit) on a white backgournd, which all lies on a white arrow cross with green oak leaf and acorn branches to each inside corner. The reverse a Bulgarian coat of arms lion on that same red translucent emanating background, surrounded by “2. Август · 1891” (2 August 1891), on that same cross. To the top is a swivel suspension bar which attaches a detailed gilded Princely Crown with a red enamel cap and a downward pointing ribbon. To the top of the crown in a ring and neck loop. There is a minor enamel chip to the obverse bottom of the cross. The cross measures 2 ½ inches square. A great looking piece.
