Bavaria, WWI - 12th Field Artillery Regiment Saber by Weyersberg, Kirschbaum & Co. The 32 7/8 inch long, curved, fullered, single edged, plated, triple etched and blued blade on this one looks great. The stamped king and knight head Weyersberg, Kirschbaum & Co. maker mark is beautifully executed. The etching is wonderful. The obverse depicts; crossed artillery cannons, an officer riding horseback, and “Kgl. Bayr. 12. Feldartill. Regt.” On a blued backing all surrounded by a laurel leaf motif. The reverse features; three horse heads, a bannered: “Zur Erinnerung an meine Dienstzeit” to either side of Ludwig III’s bust again with laurel leaves throughout. The spine features a laurel leaf motif. Great plating leaves a mirror like finish to the rest of the blade. The fit and tip are perfect. The blade rates Exc++/NM. It has some nicks to the cutting etch, minor spotting, scratches throughout and the bluing has lightened a touch. The buffer pad is lost to time. The scabbard is sheet metal based and black enamel painted. It retains 85% plating coverage, with just some oxidization throughout. It remains dent free. There is a decorative drag to the base, the soldered-on loop and ring remain intact and the separate throat is held with two screws. The multipiece hilt is constructed out of plated steel components. It has spotting throughout. The d-guard has a hole in it for a portepee. A nice curdled quillion The pommel top features a peened tang. The wood based, bakelite covered ribbed grip looks great. There is a wee crack to the inside top. Overall, it’s a great sword with fine etching!
