Kriegs-verdienstkreuz 2. Klasse mit Schwertern in Verleihungstüte by Deschler & Sohn of München. Instituted October 18, 1939, the 2nd Class War Merit Cross with Swords was awarded to soldiers for exceptional service in battle above and beyond the call of duty. It is constructed out of a die struck zinc base that has been bronze washed and finished in a lacquered coating. It depicts a pebbled Maltese style cross with two crossed broad swords and a wreathed swastika / “1939” (reverse) to the center. To the top is a soldered-on loop and ring (unmarked). Minor zinc pest. The award measures 1 7/8 inches square. Accompanying the award is 9 1/2 inches of black, white and red rayon ribbon and its issue paper and packet. The packet is constructed out of tan brown paper that has been folded and glued together. The packer reads, in black gothic style ink: “Kriegs-verdienstkreuz 2. Klasse mit Schwertern” (obverse) and “Wilhelm Deumer Lüdenscheid I. W.” (reverse). It measures 4 1/8 inches wide by 5 1/8 inches tall. Unissued.
