General’s 2nd Model Luftwaffe Dagger by Eickhorn
A M1937 Fliegerdolch für Generale by Carl Eickhorn of Solingen. Carl Eickhorn is the Textbook accepted maker of these Generals Daggers. Thomas T. Whittmann speaks specifically to these gilt Generals examples in Chapter 20 of “Exploring the Dress Daggers of the German Luftwaffe”. This piece has features the correct Textbook Eickhorn configuration.
The factory polished blade looks great. The stamped “Original Eickhorn Solingen” squirrel maker mark is crisp and beautifully executed. The crossgrain is stunning as you shine it in the light. The fit is nice and tight and the tip comes to a perfect point. The blade on this one rates Exc++/NM. It has some age grey, spotting and scratches throughout. The blue pebbled leather buffer pad continues to remain intact. The scabbard is steel based and finished in a gold gilt. It remains completely dent free. Approximately 30% of the original gold gilt remains to the expected areas. The detailed random pebbling, oak leaves and acorns all look excellent. Both throat retaining screws remain intact. The aluminum based burnished crossguard looks great with traces of gilt remaining. The eagles head, feathers, wings and top side hand enhanced oak leaves and acorns are all beautiful. The steel ferrule and burnished aluminum pommel both look excellent as well. The swastika is gold gilded and retains half (75% - reverse / 25% - obverse) of its gold finish. The dual toned trylon grip is in excellent condition. There is a wee crack to the reverse base, underneath the pommel. The springy aluminum wire wrap remains tightly intact. Comes with a nice portepee. The accompanying super deluxe hangers are zinc based and gold gilded. All the clips work well. A very rare example. I believe we’ve owned five thus far.
