Early Hirschfänger by Carl Eickhorn. The large single edged, ricassoed, spear point tip blade on this one measures 16 3/16 inches long. The early 1920s era maker mark is beautifully executed. The etch is impressive with highly detailed panels depicting hunting scenes elk, boars, grouse, stags, dogs all in the forest. The spine displays an oak leaf and acorn motif. The fit remains nice and tight and the tip comes to a perfect point. The blade rates Exc++. There is age grey throughout along with the odd nail catch to the cutting edge. The factory green felt buffer pad remains intact, peek under there and you will see a factory assembler’s number: “36”. The scabbard is constructed out of tanned blackened leather that has impressed lines and is stitched to the back. It has scratches and bruises throughout. The fittings are brass based and gold gilded. They are numbered underneath each staple. The top has an integral throat and acorn lug. The clamshell has good detail with a mighty lowing elk below an acorn and oak leaf spray. The crossguard reverse is a geometric design. The guard terminates with hand enhanced hooves. The pommel ends with a decorative lined cap secured by a ball screw. The grip is stag has three matching pinned on brass acorns. A very nice design that Eickhorn kept for many years.
