U.S. - Office of Secretary of Defense Badge

United States – Unissued – Office of the Secretary of Defense Identification Badge by N.S. Meyer Inc. of New York. Instituted March 25, 1949, renamed three times, the Office of the Secretary of Defense Identification Badge was issued to members of the United States armed forces who were permanently assigned to the Office of the Secretary of Defense (OSD) and its subordinate offices, along with some of the Defense Agencies and Department of Defense Field Activities. It is a multi-piece gilded brass and burnished sterling silver base that contains multi-colored enamel work. The round shaped obverse features centrally placed shield of the United States to the chest of an American eagle, with outstretched wings, clutching three arrows in its talons surrounded by an olive branch wreath (bottom-half) and stars (top-half), all on top of a rayed background. The fullback reverse has three rivets, is marked: “N.S. Meyer Inc. New York” above a shield and “Sterling” and has all three timmerman clutches. It measures 2 inches in diameter. It comes with the original red and white cardstock backing. It is hole punched and the bottom of the shield is gone. It is marked: “Sterling” and “Clutch”. It measures 2 ½ inches wide by 2 15/16 inches tall.
