Bronze Infantry Assault Badge by A.S

An Infanterie-Sturmabzeichen in Bronze by Adolf Scholze, Grünwald a. N.. Instituted December 20, 1939, the Infantry Assault Badge was awarded to a soldier who had taken part in three assaults since January 1, 1940, had fought in the front lines, had attempted a break-in with a weapon or had been involved in combat operations on three different days. The bronze variant was awarded to machine gun companies, gun companies and anti-tank companies. It is constructed out of a die struck zinc base that has been bronze washed. The oval shaped obverse depicts a rifle and bayonet below a Heer closed winged eagle clutching a mobile swastika within its talons. This is all surrounded by an acorn and oak leaf wreath that is tied together at the bottom. The semi-hollow back reverse is maker marked, within a triangle: “A.S.” (Adolf Scholze, Grünwald a. N.). It also displays a crimped-on ball hinge, crimped-on flat catch and sturdy round wire pin. The pin sits very tightly in the hinge, though can come out about 30 degrees. It measures 2 7/16 inches tall by 1 7/8 inches wide. An excellent bronze example!
