Japan, Mid-Edo Period (1660 AD) - Echizen Kinai Daishō Tsuba by Artist Kinai Saku. These sword guards (tsuba 鐔) are made of forged iron (tetsu 鉄). Both Dai and Sho feature a variety of five Noh masks and are signed Echizen Kinai saku to the underside of the seppa-dai. The Dai (large): has a three-dimensional “dug away carvings” (sukidashbori), with a polished surface (migaki-ji), predominately round shape (mara-gata/kikka-gata) and a mostly rounded rim (maru-mimi). There are two hitsu-ana holes. Size: 70.63 x 70.07mm, 3.89mm at rim, 66g. The Sho (small): has a three-dimensional “dug away carvings” (sukidashbori), with a polished surface (migaki-ji), predominately round shape (mara-gata/kobushi-gata) and a mostly rounded rim (maru-mimi). There are two hitsu-ana holes, the kogai features an irregular shape. Size: 68.58mm x 65.58mm, 3.43mm at rim, 39g. This daisho tsuba is for use on a katana and wakizashi. Though there are few Echizen tsuba makers, their artists have gained prominence due to their durability and lasting abundance along with their round structure and rich black coloring.
