Federal Republic of Germany - 1957 Version Ritterkreuz des Eisernen Kreuzes 1957 im Etui. In 1957, the Federal Republic of Germany permitted qualifying veterans to wear the new re-designed 1957 version award in Bundeswehr uniform. Production of these awards ceased in 1986.
It is a multi-piece die struck construction that has been soldered together. The single piece core is constructed out of a non-ferrous base that has been black enamel painted. The two-piece frame is constructed out of a nickel-silver base that has been silver washed and polished. A final protectant lacquer coating was applied over the entire award. The obverse features; a pattée style cross that has a centrally placed three-piece oak leaf cluster above “1939” (lower arm), and is all surrounded by a silvered ribbed/beaded row and a flat outlying border. The reverse displays “1813” (original creation date of the Iron Cross) to the lower arm and is all surrounded by that same silvered ribbed/beaded row and a flat outlying border. To the top is a loop and ring. The cross measures 1 7/8 inches wide and tall. Accompanying the award is a confectioned fitted ribbon. Both the award and ribbon are housed in the appropriate issue case. An inexpensive alternative for any collector!
