Stern des Deutschen Adlerordens mit Schwertern (1939-43) im Etui by 21 - Gebr. Godet & Co. of Berlin. Instituted May 1, 1937, (reorganized April 29, 1939, and again on December 27, 1943), the Order of Merit of the German Eagle was awarded to foreign nationals who had made a meritorious contribution to the German Reich on the recommendation of the Reich Minister for Foreign Affairs. It is constructed out of a multi-piece die struck 900 silver content base that has been gold fire and silver gilded and contains white enamel work all behind a protective lacquer coating. The obverse features two centrally placed crossed broadswords on top of a white Maltese style cross that has four national eagles (Godet Type 2) between each arm, above a six-pointed silver star. The silvered reverse correctly features two hollow rivets, a soldered-on block hinge with moon shaped stopper, soldered-on c-shaped catch and coke bottle pin that is marked “900 21” (silver content designation | Gebr. Godet & Co., Berlin). All of the components continue to work well. It measures 2 5/8 inches wide by 2 1/516 inches tall. Beautiful enamel work, gilding and detail. The award comes housed in its appropriate case. The case is constructed out of a wood and pressed cardboard base that is covered in a smooth red simulated leather. To the very top is a gold National eagle and an exterior thin line border. To the front is a gilded steel closure clasp. To the back are two piano hinges that are covered in the red simulated leather. The interior-bottom of the case is constructed out of a pressed cardboard base that is covered in a thick black fibrous velvet material. It has a round recessed portion for the award and hinge, pin and catch assembly. The interior top lid is constructed out of a pearl satin material with, in pressed gold foil: “Stern des Deutschen Adlerordens mit Schwerter” behind an underlying pad. It shows only the slightest wear, soil and age throughout. The case measures approximately 5 3/16 inches wide and deep and 1 5/16 inches thick. A beautiful foreign national award.
